PRODUCTION OF CALCIUM CARBIDE Calcium carbide is produced in electric furnaces at a temperature of 1900-1950°C from lime and anthracite or coke. Technical calcium carbide is a solid crystalline substance from light brown to black. APPLICATION OF CALCIUM CARBIDE Calcium carbide is used to produce acetylene, calcium cyanamide (raw material for the production of fertilizers, cyanide compounds), carbide-urea plant growth regulator; in the production of acetylene black and organic synthesis products (synthetic rubber, vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, ethylene, chlorinated derivatives of acetylene, acetone, styrene, acetic acid, artificial resins); recovery of alkali metals; when carrying out gas welding with acetylene. FORMULA OF CALCIUM CARBIDE CaC2 SAFETY REQUIREMENTS When interacting with water, calcium carbide decomposes with the release of acetylene and calcium oxide hydrate; upon contact with oxidizing agents, it also releases acetylene and heats up. Acetylene is flammable and explosive. Calcium carbide, in terms of the degree of impact on the body, belongs to substances of the 1st hazard class.
